Influencer Marketing for South African Brands

How to choose creators, set clear briefs and keep campaigns transparent and compliant.
Relevance over reach
A creator whose audience genuinely matches your customers is usually more valuable than a larger account with a loosely related following.
Review a prospective creator's subject matter, audience fit and public content before discussing deliverables. Ask what information they can provide to support a proposal and distinguish an estimate from an agreed commitment. For a Western Cape campaign, check whether the audience and service area actually overlap. A large follower count alone does not establish relevance, availability or a working relationship.
Write a clear brief
Agree on goals, key messages, deliverables, timelines and approval steps upfront, while leaving room for the creator's own voice.
Set out the intended audience, offer, publication channels, approval process and campaign dates in writing. Agree who supplies products or visual assets and who may reuse the finished content. Keep creator fees, advertising spend and any website work clearly scoped. Ask how changes will be handled before production starts, rather than assuming that additional edits or placements are automatically included.
Be transparent
Paid or gifted content should be clearly disclosed. Local advertising standards, overseen by the Advertising Regulatory Board, are worth reviewing before a campaign launches.
Plan the customer journey after a person sees the content: the destination page, availability information and enquiry contact should all be ready. Check claims against information the business can substantiate and keep an approved version of the brief. After publication, review the agreed evidence and customer feedback. Use that review to inform the next brief without presenting an unverified outcome as a case study.
