Website SEO Fundamentals for Small Businesses
By B Inspired Digital Media · Updated
The basics that help search engines understand your site — without tricks or keyword stuffing.
Describe each page clearly
Every page should have a unique, descriptive title, a helpful meta description and one main heading that reflects its topic.
Choose the customer question that a page should answer before writing its title. A specific service page can explain the work, location and next step without repeating a place name in every sentence. Check that the visible heading and page description agree with the content. Keep separate pages only where they offer a useful, distinct answer rather than a slightly changed version of the same text.
Write for people first
Explain your services in plain language, including where you work. Natural wording that answers real questions performs better over time than repeated keywords.
Use real business details: what is included, what the customer supplies, which areas you serve and how quotations are prepared. Explain limits as clearly as benefits. For a Cape Town or Western Cape service area, describe the coverage accurately instead of inventing local offices. Read the page aloud and remove repeated phrases that add keywords without helping a prospective customer decide.
Help crawlers find your pages
A sitemap, sensible internal links with descriptive anchor text and fast-loading pages make it easier for search engines to discover and understand your content.
Before launch, follow important internal links and check that each intended public page has the correct canonical address and appears in the sitemap where appropriate. Make sure menus and article links lead to the same URL format. After launch, review available indexing information and prioritise specific problems. Agree any ongoing SEO work separately from the technical foundations included in a website build.
